Maajaam is celebrating 10th birthday and it really feels like a re-birth. We can finally say that the hard work has paid off and the new residency house is ready to receive guests.

It is not just a new house, but a full new Maajaam architecture. The houses are built around the traditional farm’s inner yard which can accommodate all possible creative processes and people. The residency house offers living conditions with 4 bedrooms, attic space, open plan studio and kitchen corner. In addition to the old Lab, we have a new studio called Trollikoda (Trolleyshop) for larger, dustier work. It is also our power plant as it makes electricity for Maajaam by solar panels. The new architecture also integrates to the surrounding fields, forests and ponds, as we are planning the Wild Bits exhibition that takes place around Maajaam next year. And of course the new architecture includes people inside, around or connected to it, including you. So happy new Maajaam to everyone!

During the opening day on 17th of June we will take you on a tour of Maajaam to show you how to heat a smoke sauna and to demonstrate what kind of machines are used to create art in Maajaam. We will introduce the outdoor exhibition “Wild Bits” that is in the main programme of European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 and will be opened next summer.

There will be a performative surprise “Noisephony of Lawn Mowers” by Taavi Suisalu. It will be conducted by the composer and conductor Arash Yazdani. We will also taste and hear about wild fermented foods from Liis Tuulberg. During the day artist Kadri Toom and children are waiting for you in the forest cafe. Käty and Jüri Tarkpea are visiting us from Ag47, a competence center for traditional photography. They will introduce wet plate photography and offer the opportunity to have your portrait taken using 19th-century photographic techniques. Our good friends Aivar Tõnso, Joonatan Allandi, Helen Västrik and (our own) Mari-Liis Rebane will be playing their favourite music.

By the end of the day, the sauna will hopefully be hot and the pony-lovers can take part in a tour to Ponyland.

Those who would like to stay overnight can pack a tent and a sleeping bag with them and are welcome to camp out.

We are welcoming you on 17th of June from 14:00

See you in Maajaam!

Taavi Suisalu’s “Noisephony of Lawn Mowers”, that will be performed during opening day, is looking for participants. If you would like to be one of the performers and lawn mower operators, then let us know. Special skills are not necessary but it would be great if you have used a lawn mower or a string trimmer before. We need you to be in Maajaam around 12:00 for the rehearsal.
